It's no secret that great photography can help you rock your social strategy, and thankfully our favorite photogs - Jesi + Craig - are dishing out their tips to help you master your own photo shoots from your phone.
SHOOTING | Under expose your shots slightly. Your phones’ camera tends to overexpose and blowout shots so to avoid a ruined shot tap the lightest area in your shot and then crank up the exposure when you edit so that your whites are bright and crisp!
LIGHTING | The best lighting whether your shooting inside or out is natural light. When shooting indoors shoot near a window using indirect natural light or if the light coming through is too harsh hang up a white sheet to defuse it. Make sure there isn’t any competing artificial light like a lamp or overhead light, otherwise your shot will have a yucky yellow tinge. When shooting outdoors direct sunlight can sometimes be too harsh so shooting in light shade, on a cloudy day or at sunrise/sunset can be the best!
BACKDROP | Pick a background that goes with your style. Think about the vibe, you want. Is it clean and minimalist? Then go for a pure white surface or a concrete wall. For table top shots where I want a lux feel white marble is awesome (I use faux marble drawer liners from Amazon)! For something rustic use natural locations wood, metal, or stone. If bright and playful is your jam then look for brightly colored architecture or (for table top shots) I love to use different colored poster paper you can get from most craft stores. Just remember that your backgrounds shouldn’t be so busy that they compete visually with your subject matter, simple is always best!
EDITING | Bring your shots to life with great photo editing apps, my favorites are: Adobe Lightroom for your phone, and also Adobe PS Express, as well as VSCO and A Color Story. Whatever you choose play around and find an editing app that works well with your style!
STYLE | You want your feed to have a nice overall look and flow so it’s important to find your style. Be willing to play around and get inspo from other feeds that you like. Take the time to discover a look you really love and that works well for you and your brand. Be consistent in style without being boring.
